For a hundred years, Allsvenskan has filled our lives with passion, drama, camaraderie, and joy. Since its inception in 1924, Allsvenskan has become the largest and most beloved league in the entire country. Throughout the summer and autumn, all 67 clubs that have ever played in Allsvenskan will be honored with a specially designed retro ball from SELECT.
“Allsvenskan’s 100th anniversary is for more than just the clubs playing in Allsvenskan today. We want to recognize all the clubs that have ever played in Allsvenskan and make them feel how appreciated their part in Swedish football history is,” says Robert Johansson, Head of Communications at Swedish Professional Football Leagues.
The balls will be distributed to the clubs during special ceremonies starting immediately over the summer. The clubs currently in Allsvenskan and the Superettan clubs that once played in Allsvenskan will receive their ball and diploma during the anniversary rounds in Allsvenskan in August, while other non-elite clubs will receive their ball during a visit to the club’s office.
“We believe personal visits to all clubs are important. Not least the clubs that are now playing further down in the league system become very happy and honored when we show up. For example, Redbergslids IK no longer has its football operations today and focuses only on handball, but they were just as happy and honored. And for Gårda BK who now plays in the sixth division it was a good reminder of the club’s glory days,” says Robert Johansson.
“We are very grateful to be recognized and for the ball. Acknowledgments like these give us energy and motivation to continue engaging voluntarily, while also reminding us that the maroon club from Gothenburg is not just an ordinary neighborhood club. Historically, we are a major club,” says Josef La Carruba, club manager at Gårda BK.
All 67 clubs will also receive a diploma with the following content:
Over the past 100 years, nearly 20,000 matches have been played in Allsvenskan, around 50,000 goals have been scored, and we have all experienced emotions that cannot be diminished by words. And that is only what has been achieved on the field.
Beyond the noise of match day, Allsvenskan has shaped and nurtured the country’s future, helped people find a sense of community, and fundamentally influenced society in all the places where Allsvenskan has taken root.
Every selfless defensive run, every sold hot dog, and every dedicated youth coach are individually crucial pieces in Allsvenskan’s collective history. Without the efforts of the clubs, the enthusiasts, and all the supporters, Allsvenskan would not be where the league is today. Without all the commitment, Allsvenskan would not be Allsvenskan.
Thank you all for your contribution.
This summer and autumn, the retro ball will also be distributed to the leagues’ official partners, significant individuals, and media desks.
