This year’s winter window saw preliminary figures for Swedish clubs’ player sales exceed 500 million SEK. This marks a new record, surpassing the previous one by more than 160 million SEK for player sales during the international winter window.
“The figures are further proof that our clubs are developing increasingly skilled players and that they are also getting playing time in the clubs’ first teams,” says Svante Samuelsson, Sporting Director at Swedish Professional Football Leagues.
Every year, the Swedish Football Association releases a report that compiles the financials of Swedish elite clubs for the current year, including total player sales. However, this year’s report for the 2024 season won’t be available until May, so all numbers should currently be considered preliminary.
While waiting for that report, which is based on the clubs’ annual reports, Transfermarkt is considered a reliable source. Their summary shows that Allsvenskan clubs sold players for over 500 million SEK during the winter window. The trend has been strongly positive in recent years, with player sales in previous winters being significantly lower.
“Player valuations in Allsvenskan clubs are now at a higher level than before, and we are working strategically to further increase that level in the future,” says Svante Samuelsson.
Traditionally, most major international transfers occur in the summer. For 2024, the total figure, combining winter and summer windows, amounted to 1.1 billion SEK. These are figures Swedish football has never come close to before.
“If our clubs reinvest the capital wisely and sustainably in their operations, it will make our clubs even more competitive in sports over the coming years in an international context,” concludes Svante Samuelsson.
