So far this season, the matches in Allsvenskan and Superettan have attracted 1,968,092 spectators, which means an increase of over 100,000 spectators compared to the previous season.

“The increasing attendance numbers is a result of the club’s fine work when it comes to attracting spectators. It also proofs that both leagues hold a strong position within Sweden”, says Ola Rydén, League Manager at Swedish Professional Football Leagues.

Last season, the total attendance number for Allsvenskan and Superettan was 2,754,178, which is the second highest result for one single season (since a series with 16 teams was introduced). The total attendance record for Allsvenskan and Superettan, together and in its current format, was achieved in the 2015 season when 2,781,702 spectators visited the arenas. Looking at the attendance numbers so far this season it is possible that this year’s season in Sweden may result in a new attendance record for the two leagues.

The explanation behind the audience increase so far depends exclusively on the development in Superettan. The 152 matches played have been attended by a total of 373,065 spectators and have attracted an average of 2,454 spectators per match. After the same number of games played in the previous season, the audience average per game was 1,483, which shows an increase of 65.4 percent between 2022 and 2023.

The total number of spectators in Allsvenskan after 20 rounds played is approximately at the same level as the previous season. The 160 matches have been attended by a total of 1,595,027 spectators with an audience average per match of 9,969. With a strong finish to season when it comes to attendance, there is a good chance for Allsvenskan to reach an audience average per match of over 10,000 spectators for the first time in its’ current 16-team format.

“There are still many matches remaining which normally attract a large audience. So, it is possible that also Allsvenskan will improve its’ attendance total compared to last year. However, because of the fact that same clubs often change places with each other between the two leagues, we find it relevant to look at the audience numbers for the two leagues as a whole”, says Ola Rydén.

Helsingborgs IF, GAIS, Västerås SK, Östers IF and Örebro SK are among the clubs that attract the biggest audiences in Superettan. The Gothenburg derby between GAIS and Örgryte at Gamla Ullevi is the match that attracted the largest audience (13,011) so far during this season of Superettan.

The current seasons highest attendance number in Allsvenskan came in the third round when AIK took on Hammarby at Friends Arena. A total of 41,142 spectators visited the stadium to watch the Stockholm derby. Djurgårdens, Malmö FF and IFK Göteborg are, together with AIK and Hammarby, among the clubs in Allsvenskan that attract the biggest audiences in Allsvenskan.
