The collaboration between Swedish Professional Football Leagues (SEF) and the Swedish Futsal League (SFL) will come to an end after the current futsal season concludes at the end of April.
“We are confident that SFL and futsal, in general, will continue to develop, but from next season onwards, this will happen without an active role from SEF,” says Svante Samuelsson, Sports Director at Swedish Professional Football Leagues.
SEF began working with futsal clubs in 2018 to develop Swedish Futsal League. Since then, SFL has introduced its own logo, an improved website, a dedicated league app, and new partnerships.
“The original idea was for SEF to create year-round interest from fans and media. However, we now feel that we cannot justify continuing our involvement in futsal, as only three of our 32 SEF clubs currently have futsal teams. Additionally, starting in 2026, we will have a new media rights agreement for Allsvenskan and Superettan, which does not include Swedish Futsal League —unlike the current agreement with Discovery. For these reasons, we believe SFL will be able to develop better without SEF’s involvement,” says Svante Samuelsson.
The final round of this season’s SFL will be played on March 1, followed by the playoffs. The reigning champions are Uddevalla FC.
